And, in his trade deals, he successfully opened up some previously closed markets to American manufacturers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Trump has long regarded Europeans as freeloading off American power. He\u2019s made good on his promise to substantially reinvent the transatlantic relationship, securing a 15% tariff on the EU\u2019s exports while<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/06\/25\/politics\/nato-meeting-trump-defense-spending?cid=external-feeds_iluminar_yahoo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:forcing NATO members;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"15\" data-v9y=\"1\"> forcing NATO members<\/a> to agree to steep increases in defense spending by 2035. Its economy is plagued by problems.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But its authoritarian system means Xi can impose more pain on his people than Trump might risk inflicting on Americans. Chinese negotiators seek to shield their leader by ironing out agreements at lower levels. Trump\u2019s team seeks to set up theirs for grand photo-ops that fuel his \u201cArt of the Deal\u201d ego. There\u2019s zero chance that Xi would fly to a meeting with Trump and improvise an agreement, then dole out sycophantic praise for his dealmaking as top European official Ursula von der Leyen did at the weekend.<\/p>\n<div class=\"max-md:faux-bleed mb-4 bg-marshmallow pb-5 dark:bg-ramones md:invisible md:mb-0 md:h-0 md:overflow-hidden md:pb-0\">\n<div class=\"py-2 text-center text-xs uppercase\">Bessent told CNBC that there was extensive \u201cpregame\u201d planning in Stockholm, starting with 75 Chinese officials, compared with the 15 in the US delegation. Eventually, the teams were whittled down for the nitty gritty involving Bessent, Greer and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The Treasury chief insisted that the talks had made \u201cgood progress\u201d toward the US position on a \u201cclunky\u201d Chinese system of controls on rare earth exports.
