WASHINGTON \u2013\u00a0President Donald Trump\u00a0was ambivalent when asked about a possible tunnel from Russia to Alaska, but\u00a0Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy\u00a0didn\u2019t like the proposal.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s an interesting one,\u201d Trump told reporters at the White House on Oct. 17 during an Oval Office meeting.<\/a>\u00a0\u201cWe\u2019ll have to think about that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump then asked Zelenskyy, who was meeting to\u00a0discuss ways to end the three-year war\u00a0with Russia, for his reaction. \u201cI\u2019m not happy with it,\u201d Zelenskyy replied.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0proposal appeared on social media Oct. 16 in a post from Kirill Dmitriev, Russia’s President\u00a0Vladimir Putin’s\u00a0investment envoy and head of Russia’s RDIF sovereign wealth fund. Dmitriev suggested an $8 billion tunnel could run under the ocean for 70 miles to cross the Bering Strait, the narrowest point between the two continents.<\/p>\n

The tunnel would \u201csymbolize unity\u201d by providing a rail and cargo link between the countries, Dmitriev said. He\u00a0posted Trump\u2019s comments on social media.<\/p>\n

Dmitriev floated the proposal after Trump and Putin spent two hours talking about how to end the Russian war against Ukraine. The\u00a0two leaders plan to meet in Budapest\u00a0in as little as two weeks to explore peace talks further.<\/p>\n

Dmitriev\u00a0struck up a relationship\u00a0with Steve Witkoff,\u00a0Trump’s special envoy conducting peace negotiations in the Middle East and Ukraine. Dmitriev suggested that former Trump adviser\u00a0Elon Musk\u2019s Boring Company could build the tunnel.<\/p>\n

Trump noted repeatedly during the meeting that Putin and Zelenskyy have a lot of \u201cbad blood\u201d and \u201cdon\u2019t like each other.\u201d Trump needled the Ukrainian leader by jokingly asking what he thought of the proposal.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis came up yesterday, a tunnel from Russia to Alaska,\u201d Trump said. \u201cWhat do you think of that, Mr. President? Do you have any ideas? How do you like that idea?\u201d<\/p>\n

After Zelenskyy replied, Trump said with a smile: \u201cI don\u2019t think he liked it.\u201d<\/p>\n
