She&#8217;s &#8216;unsettled&#8217; by Trump renovations."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When Chelsea Clinton lived in the\u00a0White House\u00a0as a 90s tween, she knew it was the \u201cPeople\u2019s House.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now, the 45-year-old daughter of former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, is &#8220;unsettled&#8221; by President\u00a0Donald Trump\u00a0tearing down the historic building&#8217;s\u00a0East Wing\u00a0to make way for a\u00a0$300,000 ballroom.<\/p>\n<p>In a\u00a0USA TODAY op-ed, Clinton concedes that past presidents and first ladies have made changes to the White House that \u201cadded elements for efficiency, for comfort, for aesthetics.\u201d But she said there is no evidence that the president consulted with experts to preserve the history and integrity of the building.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith less than a year until we celebrate our country\u2019s 250th anniversary, it is unsettling that such substantial alterations to the 225-year-old People\u2019s House are being undertaken without a historic-preservation review and seemingly without the involvement of any historians, and I would love to be proven wrong here,\u201d Clinton writes.<\/p>\n<div id=\"s-0\" class=\"caas-carousel\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"group\" aria-label=\"Slideshow\">\n<div class=\"caas-img-container\">\n<div class=\"caas-carousel-slides\">\n<div class=\"caas-carousel-slide\">\n<figure class=\"caas-carousel-figure\" role=\"img\" aria-label=\"SLIDE 1 of 12, Holiday decorations are seen surrounding the East Wing entrance of the White House during a media preview of the 2024 holiday decorations on Dec. 2, 2024 in Washington, DC. When Hillary Clinton had an office there,\u00a0she worked to increase funding\u00a0for research and treatment of cancer, AIDS, osteoporosis, and juvenile diabetes and chaired the Task Force on National Health Care Reform. That\u00a0entire wing, where former first ladies Eleanor Roosevelt and Laura Bush worked too, was demolished this week \u2013 in a reversal of earlier renovation plans.<\/p>\n<p>The White House first released the plans for the\u00a090,000-square-foot ballroom\u00a0on July 31. Trump at the time told reporters that the addition would be \u201cbuilt over on the east side, and it will be beautiful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new construction follows a drastic renovation of the\u00a0White House\u2019s Rose Garden, which prompted backlash and elicited comparisons to the president\u2019s ritzy Florida property, Mar-a-Lago.
