Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) wrote on the eve of\u00a0Election Day\u00a0that he would impose tariffs on any New Yorker who moves to Texas after voting ended.<\/p>\n
\u201cAfter the polls close tomorrow night, I will impose a 100% tariff on anyone moving to Texas from NYC,\u201d Abbott\u00a0posted\u00a0on social platform X.<\/p>\n
The governor\u2019s office did not immediately respond to a request for more information from NewsNation, The Hill\u2019s sister network, on how those tariffs would work.<\/p>\n
The power to impose tariffs falls within the federal government\u2019s authority in the Constitution, not the states.<\/p>\n
The\u00a0race for New York City mayor\u00a0has been closely watched nationally.\u00a0President Trump\u00a0endorsed\u00a0independent candidate Andrew Cuomo on\u00a0Truth Social.<\/p>\n
Trump\u2019s endorsement read in part, \u201cWhether you personally like Andrew Cuomo or not, you really have no choice. You must vote for him, and hope he does a fantastic job. He is capable of it, [Zohran] Mamdani is not!\u201d<\/p>\n
Mamdani is the front-runner in the mayoral race based on polling on Oct. 29 from\u00a0Quinnipiac University.\u00a0\u00a0Polling suggested Mamdani had a lead with 43 percent, followed by Cuomo with 33 percent and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa with 14 percent.<\/p>\n
