Tariffs could cause prices of Italian-made pasta to surge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(NewsNation) \u2014\u00a0Pasta lovers\u00a0in America might soon see their favorite brands disappear from supermarket shelves over\u00a0potential tariffs from the Trump administration.<\/p>\n<p>The Commerce Department in September\u00a0published a plan\u00a0that would add a new 92% antidumping duty after a U.S. government probe found that some Italian pasta brands. However, with the existing 15% tariff on European Union imports, the total duties on Italian-made pasta could rise to 107%.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s an incredibly important market for us,\u201d\u00a0said\u00a0Giuseppe Ferro, La Molisana\u2019s chief executive. \u201cBut no one has those kinds of margins.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt would be a real shame to have the market snatched from us for no real reason.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chick-fil-A to test chicken and waffle sandwiches in these two cities<\/p>\n<p>The 13 brands that could be affected\u00a0include:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"caas-list caas-list-bullet\">\n<li>La Molisana<\/li>\n<li>Pasta Garofalo<\/li>\n<li>Rummo<\/li>\n<li>Agritalia<\/li>\n<li>Aldino<\/li>\n<li>Antiche Tradizioni Di Gragnano<\/li>\n<li>Italian-made Barilla (not including Barilla pasta made in the U.S.)<\/li>\n<li>Gruppo Milo<\/li>\n<li>Pastificio Artigiano Cav. Giuseppe Cocco<\/li>\n<li>Pastificio Chiavenna<\/li>\n<li>Pastificio Liguori<\/li>\n<li>Pastificio Sgambaro<\/li>\n<li>Pastificio Tamma<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Last year, the Commerce Department probed Italian pasta manufacturers after complaints from two U.S. companies, 8th Avenue Food &amp; Provisions and Winland Foods. The companies alleged that several Italian pasta producers were \u201cdumping\u201d their pasta into U.S. markets, essentially exporting large amounts to the U.S. in order to lower prices and drive out competition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis isn\u2019t about dumping\u2014it\u2019s an excuse to block imports,\u201d added Rummo Pasta CEO Cosimo Rummo.<\/p>\n<p>Doritos, Cheetos go dye-free, but are they healthier?<\/p>\n<p>White House spokesman Kush Desai acknowledged that Italian pasta isn\u2019t disappearing, and said the antidumping duty was preliminary and part of a technical review process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe pasta makers still have several months to continue participating in this review before this preliminary finding becomes finalized,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Observatory of Economic Complexity, U.S. imported pasta from Italy valued at $684 million in 2024.<\/p>\n<p><i>Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
