Jan 13 (Reuters) – Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev said Greenlanders could vote to join Russia \u200bif U.S. President Donald Trump did not move quickly \u200cto secure the Arctic island, Interfax reported on Monday.<\/p>\n
\u201cTrump needs to hurry. \u200cAccording to unverified information, in a few days there could be a sudden referendum, at which the entire 55,000-strong Greenland could vote to join Russia,” Interfax reported, quoting Medvedev, a \u2060former Russian president.<\/p>\n
“And then \u200cthat\u2019s it. No new little stars on the (U.S.) flag.”<\/p>\n
Trump has revived his push for the \u200dUnited States to take control of Greenland, a self-governing Danish territory, arguing Washington needs to own it to deter Russia. The U.S. \u200bpresident has said its location and resources make Greenland \u200cvital for national security, prompting firm objections from Denmark and Greenland.<\/p>\n
While Russia makes no claim to Greenland, it has long monitored the island\u2019s strategic role in Arctic security, given its position on North Atlantic routes and the presence there \u2060of a major U.S. military and \u200bspace surveillance facility.<\/p>\n
The Kremlin has not \u200bcommented on Trump’s renewed push but calling the Arctic a zone of Russia\u2019s national and strategic \u200dinterests, it said \u2060last year that was watching the \u201crather dramatic\u201d debate around Greenland closely.<\/p>\n
Russia\u2019s 2022 invasion of Ukraine fractured much Arctic \u2060cooperation. As climate change opens new routes and resource prospects, the region \u200chas become more contested.<\/p>\n
