President\u00a0Donald Trump\u00a0will address the nation Wednesday night to deliver an \u201cimportant update\u201d on\u00a0the war in Iran, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt announced\u00a0on social media.<\/p>\n
Leavitt\u00a0did not provide\u00a0more details about what Trump is expected to say. His remarks are scheduled for 9 p.m. ET.<\/p>\n
Trump discussed the war in a\u00a0phone interview with NBC News\u00a0on Tuesday morning, saying that \u201cwe\u2019re doing great\u201d and that the conflict is \u201ccoming to an end.\u201d\u00a0He later told reporters\u00a0that he expects the U.S. to “leave” Iran within two or three weeks, adding that Iran does not have to\u00a0make a deal\u00a0with the U.S. for the war to end.<\/p>\n
Still, that came a day after\u00a0Trump said\u00a0that the U.S. was negotiating with Iran and that there had been progress, while he also threatened Iranian infrastructure if a deal to end the war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz was not reached. Iran has said\u00a0there are no negotiations with the U.S.<\/p>\n
The war is entering its second month. Thirteen U.S. service members have been killed and nearly 350 have been injured since U.S.-Israeli strikes began Feb. 28, according to a U.S. official familiar with the operations.<\/p>\n
NBC News reported this month that Trump has repeatedly\u00a0been offered off-ramps\u00a0to the war but has turned them all down.<\/p>\n
In the U.S., consumers are feeling the financial burn of the conflict. The average price of a gallon of gas exceeded $4 Tuesday, hitting its highest level since 2022, as Iran continues to clamp down on the Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of the world\u2019s oil passes.<\/p>\n
Americans have expressed their anger over high oil prices, with\u00a0polls showing\u00a0voters are dissatisfied with Trump\u2019s handling of the economy.<\/p>\n
Trump\u2019s\u00a0last prime-time address to the nation\u00a0was in December, when he defended his record on the economy.<\/p>\n
