Some had partially detonated; others were in \u201cvarying states of activation,\u201d police said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Authorities responded to the Multnomah Athletic Club just before 3 a.m. after employees reported a vehicle had crashed into the building and caught fire. The driver was found dead inside, according to the Portland Police Bureau.<\/p>\n<div class=\"max-md:faux-bleed mb-4 bg-accent\/2 pb-5 md:invisible md:mb-0 md:h-0 md:overflow-hidden md:pb-0\">\n<div class=\"py-2 text-center text-xs uppercase\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"flex w-full flex-nowrap justify-center\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Portland Fire and Rescue arrived to control the blaze. (Allison Barr \/ The Oregonian via AP)<\/div>\n<p>(Allison Barr)<\/p><\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Officer Jim DeFrain, who leads the explosive disposal unit, said his team was still processing the scene more than 14 hours after being called in. Robots were deployed as a remote precaution given the risk that remaining devices could still be triggered \u2014 though DeFrain said the technology has its limits.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mb-4\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI\u2019ve been a bomb technician here in the city for over 13 years,\u201d DeFrain said. \u201cThis is by far the most complex scene that I\u2019ve ever dealt with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">FBI agents and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives personnel are assisting local police.<\/p>\n<div class=\"max-md:faux-bleed mb-4 bg-accent\/2 pb-5 md:invisible md:mb-0 md:h-0 md:overflow-hidden md:pb-0\">\n<div class=\"py-2 text-center text-xs uppercase\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"flex w-full flex-nowrap justify-center\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Portland Police Chief Bob Day described the incident as \u201cisolated\u201d and said he does not believe it constitutes an act of domestic terrorism. He deferred questions about the driver\u2019s identity to the medical examiner\u2019s office, which is still working to make a determination.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThey are the only ones who can make that notification, and so we are following their lead,\u201d Day said. \u201cThey are on scene, but they have been unable to determine the identity of this individual because of the risk involved as we continue to clear away other explosive devices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The Multnomah Athletic Club \u2014 known locally as \u201cThe MAC\u201d \u2014 is closed indefinitely.
