What the latest numbers reveal about the cost of living."},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Ten weeks into the Iran war, new government data shows that inflation is now rising at the fastest rate since 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But when President Trump was asked Tuesday if America&#8217;s financial situation was motivating him\u00a0to secure a peace deal, he dismissed the idea.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;Not even a little bit,&#8221; Trump said. &#8220;I don\u2019t think about Americans\u2019 financial situation. I don\u2019t think about anybody. I think about one thing: We cannot let Iran have a nuclear weapon. That\u2019s all. That\u2019s the only thing that motivates me.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"max-md:faux-bleed mb-4 bg-accent\/2 pb-5 md:invisible md:mb-0 md:h-0 md:overflow-hidden md:pb-0\">\n<div class=\"flex w-full flex-nowrap justify-center\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Before the war, the president spent months trying to ease voter concerns about the cost of living ahead of November\u2019s midterm elections, claiming in his Feb. 25\u00a0State of the Union address\u00a0that \u201cour policies are rapidly ending\u201d the \u201chigh prices\u201d Democrats \u201ccreated.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"mb-4\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Around the same time, Trump also declared that he had\u00a0\u201cwon affordability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But critics have long countered \u2014 as Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger did in her Democratic response to the State of the Union \u2014 that \u201cTrump\u2019s reckless trade policies have forced American families to\u00a0pay more than $1,700 each in tariff costs.\u201d The public has largely agreed,\u00a0giving Trump low economic marks in polls\u00a0and electing Democrats in off-year contests\u00a0in New Jersey, Virginia,\u00a0Florida\u00a0and elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Now, the ripple effects of the Iran war \u2014 especially on oil and gas prices \u2014 seem to be taking a toll as well, with the annual inflation rate rising to 3.8% in April, up from 3.3% in March.<\/p>\n<div class=\"max-md:faux-bleed mb-4 bg-accent\/2 pb-5 md:invisible md:mb-0 md:h-0 md:overflow-hidden md:pb-0\">\n<div class=\"py-2 text-center text-xs uppercase\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"flex w-full flex-nowrap justify-center\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI\u2019m looking for anything where I can say \u2018here\u2019s some relief,\u2019 and that\u2019s not very easy to do in this report,\u201d Michael Reid, chief U.S. economist at RBC Capital Markets,\u00a0told the New York Times\u00a0on Tuesday. \u201cGenerally, inflation is moving in the wrong direction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">So how high is the cost of living, really?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">To separate reality from spin \u2014 something that both sides engage in \u2014 Yahoo is keeping track of the key numbers that show where things actually stand, and how they&#8217;ve changed since Trump returned to the White House.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"inflation\" class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\" data-jump-link-target=\"\">Inflation<\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Inflation is the rate at which the price of goods and services increases over time. The annual inflation rate peaked at 9.1% during the pandemic, then fell to as low as 2.4% in the final months of former President Joe Biden\u2019s term. During Trump&#8217;s first year back in office, inflation generally remained under 3%. But it has spiked dramatically since the start of the Iran war on Feb. 28, driven largely by soaring energy prices.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"mb-4\" title=\"iframe embed content\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/JymyM\/2\/\" width=\"100%\" height=\"450\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"prices\" class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\" data-jump-link-target=\"\">Prices<\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A lot of what happens with the prices of basic goods is out of the president&#8217;s control. The price of eggs, for example,\u00a0skyrocketed early in Trump\u2019s second term amid a raging bird flu outbreak; it has since returned to 2024 levels.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"mb-4\" title=\"iframe embed content\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/TWFJ6\/1\/\" width=\"100%\" height=\"448\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But after hovering around $3 since last fall, the average price of a gallon of gas has shot up more than a dollar since February \u2014\u00a0a direct result of Trump&#8217;s decision to go to war against Iran. Meanwhile,\u00a0<em>overall<\/em>\u00a0prices have continued to rise since Trump took office, and the costs of certain things \u2014 beef and electricity in particular \u2014 have climbed at an even faster rate.<\/p>\n<div class=\"max-md:faux-bleed mb-4 bg-accent\/2 pb-5 md:invisible md:mb-0 md:h-0 md:overflow-hidden md:pb-0\">\n<div class=\"py-2 text-center text-xs uppercase\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"flex w-full flex-nowrap justify-center\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Trump said on May 11 that he supports\u00a0suspending the federal gas tax\u00a0\u201cfor a period of time\u201d to help lower prices at the pump. Economists\u00a0generally oppose that idea, saying it would provide minimal benefit while denying the government much-needed tax revenue.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"mb-4\" title=\"iframe embed content\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/irQNV\/1\/\" width=\"100%\" height=\"326\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"tariffs\" class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\" data-jump-link-target=\"\">Tariffs<\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">During his second term, Trump\u00a0imposed broad new import levies\u00a0that\u00a0propelled America\u2019s overall average tariff rate to 18%\u00a0\u2014 the highest since 1934 \u2014 while raising costs for U.S. households by $1,600 to $2,600 per year,\u00a0according\u00a0to\u00a0independent\u00a0estimates.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"mb-4\" title=\"iframe embed content\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/7EqJB\/1\/\" width=\"100%\" height=\"780\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But Trump\u2019s tariffs also raised hundreds of billions of dollars for the federal government \u2014 revenue that the president\u00a0proposed sending back to Americans in the form of $2,000 dividend checks.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"mb-4\" title=\"iframe embed content\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/QjIO9\/2\/\" width=\"100%\" height=\"498\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The future of Trump&#8217;s tariffs is uncertain in the wake of\u00a0a recent Supreme Court ruling\u00a0that struck down the majority of the import taxes he&#8217;s put in place. Trump has increased the rates of other tariffs in response, but revenue has still declined in recent months\u00a0amid the legal back-and-forth.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"housing\" class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\" data-jump-link-target=\"\">Housing<\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The 30-year fixed mortgage rate peaked near 8% in 2023. It\u2019s fallen since then and continued to modestly decline as the\u00a0Federal Reserve has lowered the benchmark interest rate. But mortgages are still about twice as expensive (6%) as they were in 2021 (under 3%) \u2014 and the 30-year rate has risen since the start of the Iran war.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"mb-4\" title=\"iframe embed content\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/vSAeg\/1\/\" width=\"100%\" height=\"448\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div class=\"max-md:faux-bleed mb-4 bg-accent\/2 pb-5 md:invisible md:mb-0 md:h-0 md:overflow-hidden md:pb-0\">\n<div class=\"py-2 text-center text-xs uppercase\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"flex w-full flex-nowrap justify-center\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">At the same time, rent has continued to rise \u2014 and after flatlining for awhile, home values seem to be ticking up too.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"mb-4\" title=\"iframe embed content\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/VoTSf\/2\/\" width=\"100%\" height=\"321\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"jobs-and-wages\" class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\" data-jump-link-target=\"\">Jobs and wages<\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The COVID-19 pandemic triggered sudden, massive job losses in early 2020. But the unemployment rate went on to rapidly decline under Biden, falling below 4% in 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Since the summer of 2024, joblessness has risen slightly; the most recent report, from April, puts it at 4.3%. Yet\u00a0private employers added 109,000 jobs that month\u00a0\u2014 the fastest monthly gain in more than a year.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"mb-4\" title=\"iframe embed content\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/shXAk\/1\/\" width=\"100%\" height=\"326\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Real wages \u2014 which measure the actual purchasing power of your income adjusted for inflation rather than just the dollar amount you earn \u2014 have climbed consistently under both Biden and Trump.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"mb-4\" title=\"iframe embed content\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/CYrsU\/1\/\" width=\"100%\" height=\"479\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Yet annual inflation (3.8% in April) is now rising faster than average hourly earnings (3.6% in April), and &#8220;the share of national income that goes to workers has sunk to its lowest point on record,&#8221;\u00a0according to the New York Times.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"stock-market\" class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\" data-jump-link-target=\"\">Stock market<\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Stocks had been rising since late 2022 \u2014 but after a dip last February and March, the market really took off amid the ongoing AI boom. About 60% of American adults own stocks, often through their retirement plans. The other 40% do not.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Stocks briefly plummeted after the start of the Iran war.
