President Trump on Sunday said it is \u201cvery good\u201d that thousands of lawyers have chosen to no longer work for the administration, referring to\u00a0The New York Times\u2019s reporting\u00a0on the exodus.<\/p>\n
The Times story reported that more than 10,000 lawyers working for the federal government have left since the end of 2024 to March 2026. Many of these lawyers are \u201cflocking to the offices of Democratic state attorneys general and nonprofits that are challenging administration policies in the courts, boosting Mr. Trump\u2019s opponents with seasoned lawyers,\u201d the report reads.<\/p>\n
Trump wrote\u00a0on Truth Social\u00a0that the outlet \u201cwrote a story today entitled, \u2018Trump Administration Sees Striking Exodus of Legal Talent,\u2019 as though that\u2019s a bad thing, when actually, it\u2019s very good.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThe people that are leaving are Radical Left Deep State Lunatics, who are destroying our Country, and Weaponizing Government,\u201d the president continued. \u201cMany of them didn\u2019t leave, but were fired! The Failing New York Times writes this, but makes it sound like it\u2019s a terrible thing when actually, it\u2019s just the opposite.\u201d<\/p>\n
Trump said that in \u201cmany cases, they shouldn\u2019t have been representing the U.S.A in the first place.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cLet them go on to \u2018bigger, better, and brighter\u2019 things in the future \u2014 I fully support that, and wish them all well!\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Many of the lawyers who departed the administration in 2025 either retired, left as a result of staffing cuts or resigned in opposition to Trump\u2019s policies, the Times reported. The federal government employed 17 percent less lawyers than it did at the end of 2024, with about 37,000 civilian lawyers working for the government as of March.<\/p>\n
The Department of Education lost 53 percent of its lawyers since December 2024, followed by 40 percent who left the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) during the same timeframe.<\/p>\n
The loss of lawyers working for the administration means that there are fewer to defend the administration\u2019s policies in court, the Times wrote. Former HUD lawyer Erik Heins, who was fired last year after he raised concerns about fair housing lawyers being reassigned to other offices, said that without lawyers, \u201cthere are a lot of things that just can\u2019t get done.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Times added that the president\u2019s \u201cwillingness to\u00a0blow through\u00a0traditional guardrails and\u00a0upend\u00a0the mission of federal agencies has created a volatile environment far different than what many career lawyers said they experienced in his first administration.\u201d<\/p>\n
The outlet stated that the White House did not respond to questions about the climate that has led so many lawyers to leave the government.<\/p>\n
White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson told the Times that the administration \u201cremains totally dedicated to empowering and hiring hard-working Americans who are committed to public service and delivering on the president\u2019s many promises to the American people.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThe individuals who are hired are extremely qualified and talented,\u201d she said in a statement to the outlet.<\/p>\n
