He said emergency responders were using the technique &#8220;daily, across the entire city.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"max-md:faux-bleed mb-4 bg-accent\/2 pb-5 md:invisible md:mb-0 md:h-0 md:overflow-hidden md:pb-0\">\n<div class=\"py-2 text-center text-xs uppercase\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"flex w-full flex-nowrap justify-center\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Eighteen people in the Phoenix area have died so far this year from heat-related issues,\u00a0according\u00a0to local officials, who said that figure was much higher than the five heat-related deaths recorded by this time last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;Heat related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat events,&#8221; the National Weather Service said. &#8220;Overexposure can cause heat cramps and heat exhaustion to develop and, without intervention, can lead to heat stroke.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"mb-4\">\n<div id=\"recirc-8e96d86a-51dd-3924-99ab-16f410a02a27\" class=\"mb-4\">\n<div class=\"grid gap-4 lg:grid-cols-2 lg:grid-rows-[auto_auto_1fr]\">\n<div class=\"relative w-full\">\n<div class=\"relative hidden md:flex\">\n<div class=\"grow\">\n<div class=\"h-4 bg-tertiary w-2\/5\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"_r_3rg_\" class=\"absolute inset-0 rounded-[4px] focus-within:ring-2 focus-within:ring-link\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Fire weather alerts were in place, too, for parts of the region, through Thursday. CBS News meteorologist Nikki Nolan said dry thunderstorms and low relative humidity increased risks of wildfires, noting how lightning strikes could spark flames in an area with little rain to extinguish them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Heat was also scorching stretches of the Southeast, with forecasters in the Carolinas warning of potentially extreme conditions in both states, as well as Georgia, through the end of the week.
