Why are they so concerned?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The\u00a0world&#8217;s most influential climate pattern\u00a0is baring its teeth in the Pacific.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The strengthening El Ni\u00f1o\u00a0\u2013 a natural warming of seawater that influences weather around the planet \u2013 is setting daily warm water records.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It&#8217;s not only &#8220;very likely to be the strongest event since reliable records began \u2013 it may end up the strongest by a truly mind-blowing margin,&#8221; Zeke Hausfather, a research scientist at Berkeley Earth, wrote\u00a0in a post for The Climate Brink, a Substack blog, earlier in July.<\/p>\n<div class=\"max-md:faux-bleed mb-4 bg-accent\/2 pb-5 md:invisible md:mb-0 md:h-0 md:overflow-hidden md:pb-0\">\n<div class=\"py-2 text-center text-xs uppercase\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"flex w-full flex-nowrap justify-center\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It remains to be seen what this will mean for the world&#8217;s weather over the next 12 to 18 months, but climate scientists say El Ni\u00f1o&#8217;s effects on global temperatures will increase the chances that 2026 could be the warmest year on record, and make it likely that 2027 will be the warmest.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mb-4\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Meanwhile,\u00a0world leaders have expressed concern\u00a0about the prospect of droughts, heavy rainfall events and heat waves. (It&#8217;s worth noting, however, that not all El Ni\u00f1o effects are sinister. The climate pattern is widely expected to\u00a0tame the 2026 Atlantic Hurricane season.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><strong>Economy:\u00a0<\/strong>&#8216;Super El Nin\u0303o&#8217; will have an alarming financial impact, experts fear<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">El Ni\u00f1o impacts are already being felt in the U.S., suppressing Atlantic hurricane activity and bringing unusual heat and humidity to parts of California, one of the states most vulnerable to El Ni\u00f1o&#8217;s impacts.<\/p>\n<div class=\"max-md:faux-bleed mb-4 bg-accent\/2 pb-5 md:invisible md:mb-0 md:h-0 md:overflow-hidden md:pb-0\">\n<div class=\"py-2 text-center text-xs uppercase\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"flex w-full flex-nowrap justify-center\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Sea surface temperatures already have crossed the threshold that typically marks a very strong event, Hausfather and Robert Rohde, his colleague at Berkeley Earth, wrote in\u00a0a monthly climate briefing on July 23.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The warming trajectory of sea surface temperatures in the El Ni\u00f1o region along the equator has been &#8220;remarkable,&#8221; developing faster than the 1997-98 El Ni\u00f1o, Hausfather wrote in the earlier post.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">NOAA data shows water temperatures in the region have never run this hot in July in the modern record.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"relative mb-4\">\n<div class=\"relative\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"rounded-lg\" src=\"https:\/\/s.yimg.com\/lo\/mysterio\/api\/1044ce2b44ea73be415e083728d6ee79284e89f9df153faad33c7f5ddb5ea2be\/lightyear_networkapi\/resizefill_w960;quality_80;format_webp\/https:%2F%2Fmedia.zenfs.com%2Fen%2Fusa_today_news_641%2F746b4e833176960677299c85a00cbb29\" alt=\"A sea surface temperature graphic by Climate Central, using NOAA data displayed by the University of Maine's Climate Reanalyzer, shows just how warm water temperatures have been this summer.\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" data-nimg=\"1\" \/><button class=\"group absolute bottom-0 size-full\" aria-label=\"View larger image\" data-ylk=\"elm:expand;itc:1;sec:image-lightbox;slk:lightbox-open;\" data-rapid_p=\"13\" data-y-link-id=\"0tr292u0ci07jx07ajh9\" data-v9y=\"1\"><\/button><\/div><figcaption class=\"relative text-sm mt-1 pr-2.5\">\n<div>A sea surface temperature graphic by Climate Central, using NOAA data displayed by the University of Maine&#8217;s Climate Reanalyzer, shows just how warm water temperatures have been this summer.<\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\">Why scientists are worried<\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">While El Ni\u00f1o is a naturally occurring pattern, concerns are growing about\u00a0its amplified impacts\u00a0when combined with the climate change-fueled warmer-than-normal temperatures around the globe.<\/p>\n<div class=\"max-md:faux-bleed mb-4 bg-accent\/2 pb-5 md:invisible md:mb-0 md:h-0 md:overflow-hidden md:pb-0\">\n<div class=\"py-2 text-center text-xs uppercase\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"flex w-full flex-nowrap justify-center\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The world is looking at &#8220;an unprecedented combination&#8221; between the strong El Ni\u00f1o and the elevated warmth from climate change, said Daniel Swain, a climate scientist with the University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources. That will influence what El Ni\u00f1o actually means on the ground in the U.S. and across the world, Swain said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Previous El Ni\u00f1o events temporarily raised global temperatures about 0.54 degrees Fahrenheit, he said. See impacts from previous events in the U.S. and worldwide in the following photos.<\/div>\n<p>(Reuters)<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;A potentially record-breaking El Ni\u00f1o on top of record-breaking global temperatures to begin with is a pretty big deal,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;The odds of either this year or next year, or both, setting\u00a0a new record warm average global temperature are high,&#8221; Swain said. &#8220;If we don&#8217;t get there this year, we almost certainly will next year.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"max-md:faux-bleed mb-4 bg-accent\/2 pb-5 md:invisible md:mb-0 md:h-0 md:overflow-hidden md:pb-0\">\n<div class=\"py-2 text-center text-xs uppercase\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"flex w-full flex-nowrap justify-center\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Sea surface temperatures in the El Ni\u00f1o region of the Pacific are up to 6 degrees warmer than normal for the date, a phenomenon that is several times more likely because of climate change,\u00a0according to Climate Central,\u00a0a nonprofit climate science and communications organization.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;What is most striking is how strong this event is forecast to become,&#8221; wrote Hausfather and Rohde in\u00a0their briefing. The vast majority of computer models predict an El Ni\u00f1o that exceeds the 2015-2016 record event, even taking into account the background ocean warming, the pair concluded. It&#8217;s &#8220;more likely than not to be the strongest El Ni\u00f1o ever observed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\">What can we expect in El Ni\u00f1o impacts?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A &#8220;very strong&#8221; El Ni\u00f1o can influence weather worldwide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;El Ni\u00f1o will give an extra boost to global temperatures,&#8221;\u00a0stated Alvaro Silva,\u00a0a World Meteorological Organization scientist. &#8220;We know that during El Ni\u00f1o years, the global temperatures normally reach record levels.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"max-md:faux-bleed mb-4 bg-accent\/2 pb-5 md:invisible md:mb-0 md:h-0 md:overflow-hidden md:pb-0\">\n<div class=\"py-2 text-center text-xs uppercase\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"flex w-full flex-nowrap justify-center\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In the U.S., a strong El Ni\u00f1o means &#8220;a pretty robust increase in the jet stream,&#8221; Swain said. &#8220;That can result in more intense and more frequent winter storms in California, the interior southwest and the southern tier of states.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;Some of California&#8217;s wettest winters have occurred during some of the strongest El Ni\u00f1os,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">El Ni\u00f1o can heighten hurricane activity in the eastern Pacific and\u00a0suppress hurricane activity in the Atlantic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Because of its influence on hydrologic cycles, El Ni\u00f1o can bring catastrophic floods to some regions but severe drought and wildfires to others. It can also disrupt fisheries and food production and bring about trillions of dollars in economic losses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;The current forecasts imply this could be the costliest El Ni\u00f1o on record,&#8221; Justin Mankin, a Dartmouth geography associate professor who studies El Ni\u00f1o&#8217;s economic impacts, recently told USA TODAY by email.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Specifically, there are likely to be drier-than-average conditions in Central America and the Caribbean, along with North and South America, the United Nations said. Its greatest impacts come from its connections to the larger atmosphere, such as the trade winds and upper atmospheric winds, but those teleconnections can be hard to predict.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Small differences in conditions such as ocean temperatures or the trade winds can alter what happens later. For example, El Ni\u00f1o&#8217;s ultimate impacts depend on factors such as where the maximum heating takes place in the equatorial Pacific in the fall and early winter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Part of the uncertainty rests with the fact that the models are in &#8220;uncharted waters,&#8221; Hausfather wrote.
