Dr. Anthony Fauci\u00a0appeared poker-faced as he declined questions from lawmakers for more than three hours at a\u00a0July 29 Senate hearing.<\/p>\n
His responses were consistent throughout the hearing:\u00a0refusal to answer\u00a0on the advice of his counsel. The\u00a0former public health chief, who led the U.S. response to the COVID-19 pandemic, invoked his\u00a0Fifth Amendment\u00a0rights against self-incrimination.<\/p>\n
Fauci was subpoenaed\u00a0earlier this month to testify before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee to be questioned about the origins of COVID-19 and his role during the pandemic.<\/p>\n

Days before the hearing, Sen. Rand Paul, R-Kentucky, who heads the committee, released more than 1,000\u00a0pages of diaries Fauci kept\u00a0during the doctor’s time as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.<\/p>\n

After the July 29 proceeding \u2013 during which Fauci faced both\u00a0scathing criticism from Republicans and appreciative praise from Democrats\u00a0\u2013 Paul said he plans to to schedule a committee vote next week to push for\u00a0contempt charges against Fauci.<\/p>\n
