{"id":3817,"date":"2026-09-14T07:21:38","date_gmt":"2026-09-14T07:21:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.cedritech.com\/?p=3817"},"modified":"2026-09-14T07:21:38","modified_gmt":"2026-09-14T07:21:38","slug":"an-unprecedented-el-nino-sends-scientists-scrambling-for-answers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.cedritech.com\/?p=3817","title":{"rendered":"An unprecedented El Ni\u00f1o sends scientists scrambling for answers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">As a\u00a0potentially historic El Ni\u00f1o\u00a0develops along the equator, scientists see opportunities to explore the unanswered questions about these events that disrupt global weather.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;It&#8217;s an\u00a0opportunity to learn more\u00a0about what El Ni\u00f1o is going to look like in a warmer climate,&#8221; said Emily Becker, research associate at the University of Miami&#8217;s Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A Sept. 10 update from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration\u00a0predicted a 75% chance that this El Ni\u00f1o could be &#8220;a historic event that would exceed the strength of previous El Ni\u00f1o events dating back to 1950.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Off Honolulu, NOAA recently launched\u00a0a fleet of four autonomous Saildrone Explorers on a mission\u00a0to the equatorial Pacific to study conditions in the region. He retired as a senior scientist with NOAA in June but isn&#8217;t stepping away from his work yet, given the developing El Ni\u00f1o.<\/p>\n<div class=\"max-md:faux-bleed mb-4 bg-accent\/2 pb-5 md:invisible md:mb-0 md:h-0 md:overflow-hidden md:pb-0\">\n<div class=\"py-2 text-center text-xs uppercase\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"flex w-full flex-nowrap justify-center\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">His first big El Ni\u00f1o arrived in 1982. &#8220;We had no observing system, we didn&#8217;t see it coming,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We had no forecast models. We didn&#8217;t actually realize it was happening until it was nearly at its peak.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">At the time, the international science community was planning a 10-year program to study El Ni\u00f1o, and the surprise event was something of a &#8220;shock and embarrassment,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Over a decade starting in 1984, the program built an array of ocean observing platforms and satellites. Similar versions have been used for studies in the Atlantic Ocean&#8217;s hurricane basin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Each vessel is equipped with 15 different meteorological and oceanographic sensors that constantly collect data, said Cristina Castillo, senior program manager of ocean science for the company, Saildrone. The sensors measure conditions such as temperatures, salinity, carbon dioxide and ocean currents.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mb-4\">\n<div id=\"recirc-ea0444e9-b6df-379b-8685-1aed2a9710a3\" class=\"mb-4\">\n<div class=\"grid gap-4 lg:grid-cols-2 lg:grid-rows-[auto_auto_1fr]\">\n<div class=\"relative w-full\">\n<div id=\"_r_1qt_\" class=\"absolute inset-0 rounded-[4px] focus-within:ring-2 focus-within:ring-link\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The project includes scientists at NOAA&#8217;s Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory and the University of Washington who collaborate through the joint\u00a0Cooperative Institute for Climate, Ocean &amp; Ecosystem Studies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">NOAA&#8217;s lead investigator for the project, Dongxiao Zhang, said the uncrewed surface vehicles &#8220;open a new era of ocean observation by targeting areas where data are most needed to improve our understanding and forecasts of high-impact, rapidly developing air-sea processes like this El Ni\u00f1o, that will have profound effects around the world.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The\u00a0wind-propelled and solar-powered drones\u00a0can be moved to locations where scientists want to collect more data, Castillo said. That&#8217;s helped them predict when an El Ni\u00f1o or La Ni\u00f1a event will occur and dramatically improved forecasts for tropical storms and hurricanes around the world. Now they want finer details.<\/p>\n<div class=\"max-md:faux-bleed mb-4 bg-accent\/2 pb-5 md:invisible md:mb-0 md:h-0 md:overflow-hidden md:pb-0\">\n<div class=\"py-2 text-center text-xs uppercase\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"flex w-full flex-nowrap justify-center\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">An El Ni\u00f1o climate pattern might be compared to a bonfire, with ocean heat as the dry wood, he said. Scientists are trying to learn more about the short-term weather disturbances believed to provide the spark that starts the fire. The spark doesn&#8217;t always come from the same place, he said, and there are multiple reasons why the trade winds relax or shift to start the El Ni\u00f1o\/La Ni\u00f1a events.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">This year, for example, it appears a pair of twin cyclones on either side of the equator in the Western Pacific in April helped ignite El Ni\u00f1o by producing very strong winds toward the east, McPhaden said. Other factors such as waves of heat energy in warm water, known as Kelvin waves, and short-term bursts of tropical weather disturbances in a pattern called the Madden-Julien Oscillation also play a role.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"mb-4\" title=\"youtube embed content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nzBAWirHMvA?si=GOS59tEhtlyb8qpw\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\">Why is it important to understand El Ni\u00f1o?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Ben Kirtman, dean of the University of Miami&#8217;s Rosenstiel School, said we don&#8217;t yet have answers to the &#8220;really important question&#8221; of how El Ni\u00f1o interacts with the evolving problem of climate change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">El Ni\u00f1o and La Ni\u00f1a events are nature&#8217;s way of balancing out the global atmosphere, said Jhordanne Jones, an assistant professor in the Department of Meteorology and Atmospheric Science at Penn State.<\/p>\n<div class=\"max-md:faux-bleed mb-4 bg-accent\/2 pb-5 md:invisible md:mb-0 md:h-0 md:overflow-hidden md:pb-0\">\n<div class=\"py-2 text-center text-xs uppercase\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"flex w-full flex-nowrap justify-center\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">She looks at the global system as one harmony and one melody, with all these signals within.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;With climate change, the system is hearing a different melody happening, a more irregular type of melody,&#8221; she said, and scientists need to understand how the natural variability and related weather extremes might be changing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><em>Dinah Voyles Pulver, a national correspondent for USA TODAY, covers violent weather, climate and the environment, among other news.
