Brazil\u2019s president says the world must act to stop what he describes as an Israeli \u201cgenocide\u201d in Gaza as leaders from 11 emerging BRICS nations gathered in Rio de Janeiro.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe cannot remain indifferent to the genocide carried out by Israel in Gaza, the indiscriminate killing of innocent civilians and the use of hunger as a weapon of war,\u201d President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva told leaders from China, India and other nations on Sunday.<\/p>\n

His comments came as Gaza truce talks between Israel and Hamas resumed in Doha and as pressure mounted to\u00a0end the 21-month war, which began with Hamas\u2019s October 7, 2023, attacks in southern Israel.<\/p>\n

Lula said \u201cabsolutely nothing could justify the terrorist actions\u201d of Hamas on that day, which resulted in the deaths of 1,219 people, mostly Israeli civilians.<\/p>\n

But he also offered fierce criticism of Israel\u2019s subsequent actions. Israel\u2019s military campaign has killed at least 57,418 people in Gaza, also mostly civilians.<\/p>\n

BRICS countries have been in disagreement over how strongly to denounce\u00a0Israel\u2019s bombing of Iran\u00a0and its actions in Gaza.<\/p>\n

\u2018<\/em><\/strong>Autonomy in check once again\u2019<\/em><\/h2>\n

Leaders in Rio called for reform of traditional Western institutions<\/em> while presenting BRICS as a defender of multilateral diplomacy in an increasingly fractured world.<\/p>\n

With forums such as the G7 and G20 groups of major economies hamstrung by divisions and the disruptive\u00a0America First\u00a0approach of United States President Donald Trump, expansion of BRICS has opened new space for diplomatic coordination.<\/p>\n

In his opening remarks, Lula drew a parallel with the Cold War\u2019s Non-Aligned Movement, a group of developing nations that resisted formally joining either side of a polarised global order.<\/p>\n

\u201cBRICS is the heir to the Non-Aligned Movement,\u201d Lula told leaders. \u201cWith multilateralism under attack, our autonomy is in check once again.\u201d<\/p>\n

BRICS nations now represent more than half the world\u2019s population and 40 percent of its economic output.<\/p>\n

Leaders from Brazil, Russia, India and China gathered for the its first summit in 2009. The bloc later added South Africa and last year included Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates as members. This is the first summit of leaders to include Indonesia.<\/p>\n

Some leaders were missing from this year\u2019s summit, however. Chinese President Xi Jinping chose to send his prime minister in his place. Russian President Vladimir Putin is attending online\u00a0because of a warrant\u00a0issued for his arrest by the International Criminal Court.<\/p>\n

Still, several heads of state were gathering for discussions at Rio\u2019s Museum of Modern Art on Sunday and Monday, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.<\/p>\n
