{"id":870,"date":"2025-07-14T07:36:01","date_gmt":"2025-07-14T07:36:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.cedritech.com\/?p=870"},"modified":"2025-07-14T07:55:51","modified_gmt":"2025-07-14T07:55:51","slug":"the-eu-is-delaying-retaliatory-tariffs-on-us-goods-in-hopes-of-reaching-a-deal-by-aug-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.cedritech.com\/?p=870","title":{"rendered":"The EU is delaying retaliatory tariffs on US goods in hopes of reaching a deal by Aug. 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>PARIS (AP) \u2014 The European Union will suspend retaliatory\u00a0tariffs\u00a0on U.S. goods scheduled to take effect Monday in hopes of reaching a trade deal with the\u00a0Trump\u00a0administration by the end of the month.<\/p>\n<p>\u2033This is now the time for negotiations,\u2033 European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen told reporters in Brussels on Sunday, after President\u00a0Donald Trump\u00a0sent a letter announcing new\u00a0tariffs of 30%\u00a0on goods from the EU and Mexico starting Aug. 1.<\/p>\n<p>The EU \u2014 America\u2019s biggest trading partner and the world\u2019s largest trading bloc \u2014 had been scheduled to impose \u2033countermeasures\u2033 starting Monday at midnight Brussels time (6 p.m. EDT; 22:00 GMT). If they can\u2019t reach a deal, she said that \u2033we will continue to prepare countermeasures so we are fully prepared.\u2033<\/p>\n<p>Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni\u00a0warned Sunday that a trade war \u201cwould make us all weaker in the face of the global challenges we face together\u201d and said Italy would actively work for a fair deal. \u201cEurope has the economic and financial strength to make the case for a fair and common-sense agreement,\u201d her office said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani was heading to Washington for talks Monday with the U.S. administration and Congress. The right-wing government of Meloni, the only EU leader to attend Trump\u2019s inauguration, has sought to position itself as a \u201c\u00a0bridge\u201d between Brussels and Washington.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has said his global\u00a0tariffs\u00a0would set the foundation for reviving a U.S. economy that he claims has been ripped off by other nations for decades. And we\u2019ll see how it works out,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. trade partners \u2014 and companies around the world including\u00a0French winemakers\u00a0to German carmakers \u2014 have faced months of uncertainty and on-and-off threats from Trump to impose tariffs, with deadlines sometimes extended or changed. The tariffs could have ramifications for nearly every aspect of the global economy.<\/p>\n<p>The value of EU-U.S. trade in goods and services amounted to 1.7 trillion euros ($2 trillion) in 2024, or an average of 4.6 billion euros a day, according to EU statistics agency Eurostat.<\/p>\n<p>Trade ministers from EU countries are scheduled to meet Monday to discuss trade relations with the U.S., as well as with China.
