Just one day after the FBI added KaShawn Nicola Roper to its Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list, the agency announced that the woman charged for her alleged role in a 2020 Kansas City homicide has been found.
Kansas City prosecutors charged Roper, 50, with second-degree murder 18 days after an Aug. 23, 2020, shooting near 68th Street and Cleveland Avenue that left 23-year-old Jazmyn Henrion dead and another woman injured. She was also charged with two counts of armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon.
A federal arrest warrant was issued for her in July 2021 for alleged unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.
On Tuesday, the FBI, the Kansas City Police Department and the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office announced Roper’s addition to the Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list, offering up to a $1 million reward for information leading to her arrest.
Roper was apprehended “without incident” in High Springs, Florida, at 10:30 a.m. EST Wednesday by the High Springs Police Department and Alachua County Sheriff’s Office, according to a news release from Dixon Land, a public affairs specialist with the FBI Kansas City.
Her arrest stems from a series of tips submitted to law enforcement after Tuesday’s announcement, the release said.
High Springs, Florida, which lies just northwest of Gainesville, is known for its outdoor activities, according to the city’s website. U.S. Census data estimates the city is home to around 7,000 residents.
Following Roper’s arrest, Jackson County Prosecutor Melesa Johnson said the former Kansas City woman will “now face the full weight of accountability for her alleged actions in 2020.”
“Ms. Roper’s arrest is a result of the power of partnership on all levels and the power of a public that refuses to accept violence as a reality,” Johnson said. “Speaking up can keep you and your family and community safe, but also gives a grieving family hope that one day justice will be served.”
Kansas City police responded to an area hospital around 3:30 a.m. on Aug. 23, 2020, after Henrion and another woman, both suffering from gunshot wounds, arrived at the facility in a private vehicle. Henrion died at the hospital.
Roper was the 13th woman and second from Kansas City to appear on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted list, which has held the names of 541 fugitives since its creation in 1950. The first Kansas City woman, Shauntay L. Henderson, appeared on the list on March 31, 2007, and was arrested without incident the same day.
