Donald Trump’s presidential approval rating was on the rise after the State of the Union address, but the Feb. 28 attack on Iran has given the president and the Iran war mixed reviews among Americans in the polls.
The president hit all-time low job approval numbers in this term just prior to his State of the Union address, however American sentiment of his speech proved positive, according to the Economist/YouGov poll, getting 57% positive reviews of the speech versus 32% that felt it was poor.
As Trump’s approval numbers were on the rise after the SOTU, Saturday’s attack on Iran and the ensuing war have drawn a heavily polarized public sentiment on the street and in the polling.
While many people took to the streets and rallied in celebration over the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and calling for the end of the Iranian regime, many took to the same streets to protest the war with concerns over escalating Middle East violence.
In a Trafalgar Group poll taken after the attack on Iran, 53.9% approved of Operation Epic Fury versus 40.6% that disapproved, meanwhile Trump’s overall job approval rating of 49.5% did not fare as well, but was above water with a 48% disapproval rating.
In a Fox News national survey 61% of those polled believe Iran poses “a real national security threat” to the United States, however this didn’t translate into support for the war, which polled 50/50 for and against, or Trump’s job rating on foreign policy, which polled a 60% disapproval rate. The president’s overall job performance rating polled at 43% approval.
Other recent polls taken this week by CNN, NBC and YouGov, found a majority of voters disapprove of Iran strikes or Trump’s handling of the attack, expressing fears of escalation. However, the president’s overall approval ratings have slightly risen since prior to the Iran war.
