April 26 (UPI) — A small plane crashed in the Minneapolis suburb of Brooklyn Park over the weekend, killing two people, including a state legislator from North Dakota, federal and local officials said.
The Beechcraft BE33 with two people aboard crashed in a residential field shortly after takeoff from Crystal Airport in Minnesota around noon CDT Saturday, according to a statement from the Federal Aviation Administration, which said it and the National Transportation Safety Board were investigating.
Police responded to a report of the crash at Brooklyn Park near the airport at 11:51 a.m., with officers and firefighters arriving at the scene to find a small aircraft on fire, which responders extinguished.
“Unfortunately, everybody on the plane perished,” Matt Rabe of the Brooklyn Park Police Department said during a press conference.
The North Dakota Democratic-Nonpartisan League Party confirmed online that state Rep. Liz Conmy of Fargo was among those killed in the crash.
“We are completely heartbroken and gutted by the loss of Representative Liz Conmy,” the Democratic Party affiliate said in a statement.
“Her death is a profound loss for our state. As a lawmaker, she championed public education, the environment and transparency. Liz had a natural ability to make friendships across the political spectrum. We send our deepest condolences to her children, family and friends.”

Conmy represented District 11 in the state’s House of Representatives since 2022.
North Dakota Gov. Kelly Armstrong directed all U.S. and North Dakota flags to be flown at half-staff from dawn to dusk on the day of Conmy’s interment, while encouraging residents and businesses to do the same.
“Kjersti and I are saddened by this tragic loss and offer our deepest condolences too her family, friends and fellow legislators,” he said in a statement.
“We ask North Dakotans to join us in keeping them in our prayers.”
